Rivers Pearl
Pearls are produced by molluscs, mussels and oysters that belong to the family Unionidae. Saltwater pearls are produced by oysters in the ocean, while freshwater pearls come from mussels growing in lakes, rivers or ponds, except the sea. These mollusks create a substance called Nacre when an irritating object enters its shell. De Nacre will wrap around the object, until it is covered with this iridescent material, and the resulting bead is known today as a gem.
Maybe you've heard of the term natural pearls and cultured pearls. Natural pearls are created without human intervention, while cultured pearls are produced by a process which will introduce a foreign body inside the mollusks' shell, and harvest Nacre is the coating. Because of overfishing, the beads produced in a natural way, is very rare. Most pearls that you can find on the market today are already grown.
Have you ever wondered how freshwater cultured pearls began? Thousands of years ago, most pearls came exclusively from the sea. However, not all oysters produced a pearl inside. In a harvest of three tonnes, only about three or four oysters can produce a perfect pearl. Therefore, the beads at the time was outrageous expensive.
So scientists thought of a way to culture pearls, and they found out that if they want to pry open the shell of the mussels, introduce a very small object (like a bead or a metal), then return the mussels in water, it will also coat the object with Nacre and produce a pearl.
The first cultured pearls actually originated in Japan, with pearl farmers are experimenting with freshwater mussels in Lake Biwa, a lake near Kyoto. Their first harvest appeared around 1930. Immediately, the Freshwater Pearl was a big hit? The luster and color, so nearly the same as natural pearls, but prices are lower and the supply is continuous.
Unfortunately, there was a decrease in production of beads during the Second World War, but in 1950 they were back again in the market. Because of its success, nearly all of the supplies to the global market came from the lake. Actually, there are already some call freshwater pearls as "Biwa" refers to the lake where it originated.
This continued until the 1973rd But there were signs of slow production because of the resorts, agriculture and industries were developed around the lake. Soon the Biwa pearl farms were barely surviving because of pollution from industrial modernization. Then there came a time when no more pearls can be grown in this lake. Added to Japanese had the disadvantage of not having a large lake or river to move their production and this was combined with a smaller workforce.
Because of this, China to culture freshwater pearls. Indeed, they began to flood the market with plenty of beads that give good quality and cheap too! Chinese pearl farmers have also learned to develop and perfectly formed bead with increased size and enhanced gloss. Now they are the largest supplier of global demand for freshwater pearls.
