Enamel Pendant
Help to get started using the PMC, Art Clay?
I have experience with small copper and large series, but my mother is currently using my oven, 300 miles away. I also do exotic strung Gemstone bead jewelry, and I want to learn how to use precious metals to create original Clay Pendant and accents. I already have a small butane torch that I've seen pictured with "starter kits". That is why I have not bought a starter kit, I already have the flashlight. So can you tell me what should I buy to get started? including surface to work and on fire. I can also incorporate semi-precious stones or pearls in the clay before Detonation? Thirdly, there is no specific "how to" books that you can recommend? Thanks for your help.
I have worked in precious metals Clay for the last three years and a 30-year-old silversmith, I think it is a fantastic medium to work in. I have completed 19 pieces, all portable art, some on the screen in my home and some at Art Center where I took lessons. You can preset a few stones before firing, if they have a MOS hardness greater than 7th All the catalogs tell you which. I've done it several times, and the pieces look great! There are countless "how to books." I would recommend you go to www.riogrande.com and look through their PMC part of everything from stoves to torches, how-to videos and supplies. Or you can call 800-545-6566 and order one of the three catalogs. The one to start with is Tools and equipment that can cost you $ 10.00, but you get it back with your first order. There are many other sites that can accommodate you in the same manner and on equal in cost. My studio workbench has a layer of brick oven that will protect the surface to 1800 degrees. These can be purchased at any brick yard or barbecue delivery house and run around $ 2.00 @. Other basic equipment I have is a Paragon kiln with a bead window where I can make focal beads and such. A PMC tool kit (you can also use ordinary clay tools, as they are the same). Instead of going through a littany of what I have you need to contact the local Parks and Recreation Department to see if they the PMC courses. Here in SW Florida for the next town from me offers class 6-8 weeks, three hour sessions for around $ 100 and has continued into the year.
